If you have ever spent any time in the company of a toddler, then you know they can be very picky about what they eat. Encouraging healthy eating when your child is young helps foster healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Even the pickiest eaters can be tempted with healthy food choices -just don’t be surprised if they want the same snack for days in a row!

The best thing you can do to encourage your toddler to eat a healthy diet is to offer a wide range of choices. Toddlers tend to be very fickle- and just because they refused a particular food today, doesn’t mean they won’t absolutely love it when you offer it next week. When your toddler is used to the flavors and textures of things like vegetables and naturally sweet foods like fruit, they will turn to these items first when they are hungry, instead of filling up on greasy chips or candy.

One of the best ways to encourage your toddler to eat a healthy diet is to do so yourself.

It is hard to convince a child of any age to eat apples and grapes if you fill your own diet with fast food and sweets. Children are natural born mimics, and they to be just like their parents and the “big kids” in the family. Toddlers want to eat what they see the rest of the family enjoying, so take the opportunity to set a great example, and let your toddler watch you enjoy a healthy variety of snacks.

When you are choosing snacks for your toddler, try to avoid anything containing refined sugar. Stick to things like applesauce, yogurts, and diced fresh fruits. Babies are not born with a need for sugary snacks, but can quickly develop the taste for refined sugar as they get older. Fresh fruits have the ability to meet that sweet craving without having the harmful effects of large amounts of refined sugar.

Fruits also provide your little one with a daily dose of vitamins and fiber as well.

Look for snacks that provide some calcium, low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt, low fat cheese and calcium fortified juices. As your child grows from an infant to a toddler they need lots of calcium to ensure healthy bones and growth. Consider offering real ice cream or frozen yogurt in place of sugary popsicles or frozen treats, both of these items are rich in calcium, and have some protein as well.

Toddlers also need a good supply of iron to be healthy, so consider serving snacks or meals rich in iron. You can add broccoli to macaroni and cheese, or sneak some iron rich meats into pizza sauce. Don’t forget beans, dried fruits and iron-fortified cereals-you can serve these on their own, or use as ingredients for making other foods.

In a hurry? Forget fast food–there are some great prepackaged products that offer completely organic options for your child. While these may e a little more expensive, they do ensure that your child gets the nutrients they need. You can combine these premade items with fresh fruit and milk for a well rounded but quickly made meal.

By planning ahead and knowing what nutrients your child needs most, you can be sure that your toddler is eating a well rounded, healthy diet.

Calcium. Some nutrition researchers have theorized that endometriosis is related to an inability to absorb calcium properly. Take 1,500 milligrams daily using chelate form.

Iron. A deficiency is common in those with this disorder. Use ferrous fumarate form. DO NOT take iron supplements unless anemia is diagnosed. Take as directed by physician.

Magnesium is one of the most important dietary minerals in the body and is present in large amounts in the liver, which helps regulate estrogen. Use chelate form. Take 1,000 milligrams daily at bedtime.

Herbal Supplements:

Flaxseed oil contains two essential fatty acids that reduce symptoms associated with endometriosis and menstrual problems. Take as directed on label.

Wild Yam. The root of this vine contains an alkaloid that relaxes the muscles of the abdomen. In addition, it contains anti-inflammatory saponins. It is also believed to have progesterone-like action, which may provide some mild pain relief.

Chaste berry (aka: Vitex) is an herb that fortifies a women’s reproductive system and can help control endometriosis and alleviate some of its side effects. It contains glycosides and flavonoids which are probably responsible for its stimulating effects on the pituitary gland, which in turn, signals the production of progesterone. Studies have shown that chaste berry helps to normalize the balance of female hormones, especially when too much estrogen is circulating.

Milk thistle is particularly effective for balancing the female menstrual cycle and supporting liver health.

Alfalfa is a good source of vitamin K, which is necessary for blood clotting and healing. It is also a good source of needed minerals, including iron.

Kelp supplies needed dietary minerals.

Astragalus, garlic, goldenseal, myrrh gum, pau d’arco and red clover have antibiotic and anti-tumor actions.

Burdock root and red raspberry leaf help to balance hormones.

Siberian ginseng can be used to treat some cases of endometriosis. Use capsules, tablets or an extract according to the directions on the label. Be sure to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment with your doctor.

Stinging nettle is rich in iron.

Passion flower relaxes the smooth muscles that line the uterus making it helpful with controlling menstrual discomfort and back pain associated with endometriosis.

Black cohosh dried root and rhizome contain glycosides, isoflavones, isoferulic acid and tannins. This powerful combination promotes menstruation, relaxes uterine muscle spasms and relieves muscle related pain. Research indicates that black cohosh has an estrogen-like action, so its health benefits may also be related to a hormonal effect. DO NOT take if you are pregnant.

Dong quai has the abilities of maintaining healthy menstrual cycles, especially useful in maintaining regular periods and balanced estrogen levels.

Other herbs that may be helpful in relieving menstrual discomforts include balm, chamomile, dandelion, mint, rosemary, thyme, valerian and white willow.

I received a tweet the other day asking what are good healthy foods to eat. I soon realized this question could be answered better in an article than a short tweet back.

There were a lot of ways to think about what makes a food important and good to have at all times. Fulfilling our nutrient requirements came to my mind first. So, a food that has a large variety of nutrients will rank higher than a food containing only a few nutrients. Then, I thought about which nutrients are the most important. For a healthy diet, you will always want fiber, omega fatty acids, and vitamins. My final criteria was taste. To stick to healthy eating habits you have to enjoy your food. Here are some healthy foods to eat each day if you choose:

Can of Tuna
Tuna is a great food to have at all times in the pantry. Tuna is packed with lots of protein with a low fat content.

This food is great for muscle development. Tuna in a can doesn’t contain the concentration of omega fatty acids like fresh tuna does. Another great thing about canned tuna is that it’s cheap.

Whole Wheat Anything
If you haven’t switched from white bread and pastas to wheat, you need to now. The whole wheat carbohydrates keep your insulin levels more stable than white, starchy carbs. Your insulin levels will determine how much food is processed into fat cells. So, this can play a major role in fat loss. Just by switching from white bread to wheat bread, you will notice a difference.

Plant Oils
You need your omega fatty acids. These plant oils are a great source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These oils can be cooked with or even just added to a meal like a salad. I add a scoop of olive oil to my orange juice.

Sesame Oil
Soybean Oil

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Always have fruits and vegetables on hand. I recommend the fresh ones over the frozen. The fresh contain more nutrients and just taste better. You should be getting at least 2 large servings a day of each fruits and vegetables. If you get cravings for junk food, eat a fruit instead. They are very tasty and will mellow your blood sugar keeping your mind away from potato chips or ice cream. A diet high in fruits and vegetables is full of benefits like lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. It also lowers risk of eye and digestive problems.

Spices and Herbs
I find this last food choice is important because it lets you get creative with your food. Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean eating boring. Spices and herbs have nearly 0 calories and only add flavor to foods. Eating many of these spices have health benefits as well. Here are some good choices for spices along with what they do for you:

Mustard
Low in calories and high in taste. It’s also known as a stimulant that relieves respiratory problems

Horseradish
Similar to mustard, but can be used as a digestive stimulant

Cayenne pepper
Increases metabolism and helps burn fat

Ginger
Also speeds up metalism, but also inhibits nausea from morning sickness or motion sickness.

Garlic
A regular intake of garlic can decrease cholesterol and blood pressure. As well as help your digestion process. Recent research has shown garlic to be helpful in treatment of diabetes.

These 5 healthy foods to eat are great when mixed together to make a healty diet. There are many recipes to use for each item. There are many more healthy foods to eat which you can discover on your own. Look at the nutritional values and compare to our criteria.
