The two most common causes of allergic reactions are atopic, or inhalants, mainly dust mites, pollen, mold and mildew, and allergens that are present in flea saliva. The symptoms of an allergy are most commonly caused from inhaling an antigen, or a substance which causes the production of antibodies. Studies show that in excess of 40 percent of canines react to the offending substances in flea bites.
Other less prevalent causes are allergic reactions to food or of the skin. Skin problems include the mange and ringworm, which are fungal infections. A pet exhibiting bad reactions to a food is usually allergic to one of the main ingredients found in most dog foods. Allergic and irritant contact dermatitis are two other rarely occurring skin conditions that may be caused by contact with substances that provoke a reaction or from irritating chemicals.
Complicating a specific diagnosis as to exactly what antigens are to blame, is the fact that the same symptoms, itching and skin problems, characterize the different types of disorders. Vomiting and diarrhea may indicate a food allergy, and continuing ear problems or increased bowel movements are other possible signs. A food trial, in which the pet is placed on a novel food diet for twelve weeks, is the method used to isolate the food responsible.
Avoidance of the allergen is a common strategy to reduce symptoms for food, flea, atopic and skin problems. By removing and then reintroducing suspected allergens one at a time, one may discover the cause. Restricting ones pet to a clean, uncarpeted room and keeping them away from possible allergens is called an exclusion trial. Slowly introducing possible causes, including rubbing a substance such as grass on the paw, will help to identify it.
The most effective treatment that clears up the problem in many cases is giving Omega-3 fatty acids, or fish oil, to ones pet. The effects of chemicals known as histamines that are produced by the antibodies that fight off antigens are behind the symptoms, and fatty acids reduce those side effects in many cases. Several antihistamine drugs are available that can be administered if symptoms persist.
Temporary relief from itching can be obtained with topical therapy, consisting of shampoos, sprays, ointments and solutions that are applied to the skin. Some containing hydrocortisone are especially effective. Biotin is a chemical, known as vitamin B7, that relieves the symptoms for a minority of dogs.
In the most stubborn cases, immunotherapy, similar to allergy testing and injections for humans, is used as a dog allergies treatment. This consists of skin tests to determine the allergens involved, then giving weekly injections until immunity builds up. Steroids are another effective remedy, but because they may affect the immune and endocrine systems, their use is normally reserved for severe cases.
Last week, I commented on Dr. Mercola’s fallacious article regarding the problem with vegetarianism/veganism and why such diets are not right for everyone.
You can find both Parts I and II at the links below:
Mercola Says a Vegan Diet is Not for Everyone
Mercola Says a Vegan Diet is Not for Everyone (Part II)
Much of Mercola’s argument rests on something called “Nutritional Typing.” Today I would like to take a look at just what Nutritional Typing is and if there is any proof supporting such a dietary theory.
What is Nutritional Typing?
If you’ve been to Mercola’s website, you are probably aware that he promotes something called “Nutritional Typing”. In a nutshell, this is the belief that no diet is perfect for everyone and that each individual needs to eat specific foods based on his or her own unique metabolism.
According to Mercola, human dietary needs can be placed into three categories:
Protein: This person should eat mostly protein (e.g. meat, eggs, dairy)
Carbohydrates: This person should eat mostly carbohydrates (e.g. grains, vegetables, fruits)
Mixed: This person should eat a mixture of both.
How do you know which category you fit into? By taking a free 22-question survey offered on Mercola’s site.
Where’s the Science?
There is no science to back up the Nutritional Typing claim.
As Dr. Colin T. Campbell, author of The China Study, point out here:
“Mercola and others of the Atkins stripe believe that 1) we are biologically different, 2) we therefore require unique dietary lifestyles that represent a broad spectrum of possibilities and 3) we–perhaps with very expensive phone consultations–are essentially required to customize our diet, based on our reactions to food soon after we eat it.Mercola and his colleagues also never fail to advocate that diets high in protein, fat and cholesterol are not only acceptable but are advisable for most people.
Then the Mercolanites make the audacious claim that this is science based when, in fact, almost all of these people have little or no understanding of scientific research and essentially no evidence of actually doing scientific research. This is a mockery that mostly leaves people where they want to be (in the ‘pleasure trap) while still pursuing a lifetime leading to a very high risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis and other serious illnesses.”
On the other hand, there is plenty of evidence to support a low fat, high carb vegan diet like the one Dr. Campbell advocates. Here are just a few resources that are worth checking out:

What About Nature?
A simple, but equally valid criticism of Nutritional Typing is that every other animal eats a species-specific diet, i.e. all cows eat grass and all lions eat meat. Humans are also animals and so it makes sense that our species would follow the same protocol. That is to say, all humans (and any animals like us) should thrive on the same types of foods.
Sure, you’ve probably heard of that lion who wouldn’t touch meat or the UK kitty who loved broccoli. Heck, I even have a maine coon who loves tomatoes, cantaloupe, and grapes!
But these are anomalies. For every veg-eating tiger you find, there are hundreds and hundreds more that eat other animals.
It’s also important to mention that both of these cats were NOT wild animals. Both lived in captivity and were fed vegetables by their handlers/owners. It is quite difficult to imagine a full-grown feline, much less an adult lion with an average weight of 250 pounds, surviving for long on a diet of low-calorie foraged vegetation.
So if neither nature nor science support nutritional typing, what standard of measurement does Dr. Mercola use to gauge whether or not you should chow down on cow flesh or gorge yourself on grains?
It all comes down to your own personal preference.
My Nutritional Typing Results
I actually signed up and took Dr. Mercola’s free Nutritional Typing test offered on his site. In my next article, I’ll show you some of the questions that were asked, my responses, the results, and the role personal preference plays in Nutritional Typing.
So until next time…

Cardio training machines used in indoor aerobic exercise are all about getting the heart pumping. While treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes are generally marketed as tools to lose weight, they are classified as cardiovascular workouts or cardio for short.
Benefits of Cardio Training
Let’s start by explaining that aerobics can be described as any extended physical activity that makes you breathe hard and increases your heart rate for a sustained period. While it does burn calories – a lot of them – aerobics also conditions your heart and lungs, makes your muscles stronger, and provides a host of other health benefits such as lowering your blood pressure.
Most any aerobic activity can be tailored to your needs, and cardio workouts don’t have to be strenuous to give you results. You can engage in a low-impact aerobic activity that is easy on the joints yet will still help improve your cardiovascular system.
Workouts to Choose From
What types of cardio training would be the right choice for your needs? Here’s a sampling:
The Machines:
The treadmill remains the most popular machine for fat-burning indoor aerobic exercise. Keep up a steady pace for an hour and you could cover 4 miles and burn up to 350 calories or more. As an added benefit, most of the new budget priced machines include such advanced features as power incline motors, interactive programming, and entertainment features such as mp3 plug-ins.
An hour spent on a stationary bicycle in front of the TV at home, or in a spinning class at your health club, seems to fly by!. Like the other indoor aerobic exercise activities listed here, cycling on a regular basis increases your body’s production of endorphins; those neurotransmitters in your brain that make you feel good – they are the body’s natural painkillers. Who knew pursuing sweat and pain could be such a “feel good” rush?
Rowing machines (and row stations on home gyms) provide cardio and strength-building exercise. It’s low impact and many people love the rhythmic motion of rowing. It works all major muscles groups including your legs and core, as well as the heart and lungs.
Less popular is the Stair climber that can burn upwards of 400 calories per hour. Climbing steps has been an unofficial fitness regime for people for centuries but these torture machines will get your glutes and thighs toned and FIT! For best results, use a stair climber in addition to other cardio machines and indoor aerobic exercise activities.
The elliptical trainer is another popular machine that provides a total body conditioning workout. Like the treadmill, elliptical machines have a host of read-outs on the console that display your exercise progress so that you can work in the Target Heart Range – which is the range of heartbeats per minutes that promote an efficient use of oxygen in your body, allowing you to achieve optimum cardio conditioning and progression.
Other Activities:
Sculpting Classes are bodyweight training boot camps that will kick your butt for an hour with push-ups, squats, and cardio drills. This mix of resistance training and cardio forces your body to use stored carbohydrates as well as stored fats to produce energy for the training session.
A punching bag and/or heavy bag will get out your aggression, and get the heart pounding, as well as burn a ton of fat. For people who have never considered taking up boxing as an indoor aerobic exercise, boxers can attest to the fact that it is a high-energy sports activity. This great upper body exercise can be done on alternative days to other workouts. You can also do kickbox on the heavy bag for an exhausting lower body workout.
Jumping rope is a classic calisthenics type exercise that should be mentioned here as well. It gets your cardiovascular system stronger and to function more efficiently. Skipping rope is not just for kids and professional boxers; it works the lower body, and it’s gentler on your knees than running since you land on the balls of your feet rather than the heels or flat-footed.
Pick a Mode of Exercise
If you belong to a health club, take advantage of any of these types of machines that are available. If you prefer more privacy and convenience, invest in a treadmill or another method of indoor aerobic exercise to get your cardio workout without having to leave the house. It will only take an hour, just three or four days a week, and you will see improvements in your stamina, strength, and endurance, as well as the many other benefits already mentioned.
The least dangerous of these latex materials is a reaction that is contained locally, called Irritant Dermatitis.Diagnosis This is when the latex causes an acute irritation in the skin in contact to it but does not involve the systemic immune response of the body. This is not considered to be an allergic response; however, irritant hand dermatitis causes breaks in the skin integrity which could permit a lot more of the sensitizing latex proteins or chemicals to enter inside the body. This condition could turn an uncomplicated dermatitis into a full blown latex allergy. Irritant Dermatitis also could be caused by insufficient drying after washing the hands, scrubbing the skin too hard or using very strong detergents, the mechanical abrasion sometimes caused by the glove powder, or anything that could dry the skin and encourage cracks and cuts in it. The second reaction that the human body could have is the Delayed Cutaneous Hypersensitivity or the Type IV Allergy. This skin reaction is still local, limited to the skin exposed to the allergen and mediated by the T-cell lymphocytes. The threat of latex, again, is when the skin breaks and permits the entry of more of the allergen. The discrepancy of this skin reaction is that the signs of the reaction are seen 6 to 48 hours after exposure. The third possible skin reaction of the body is the Type I Allergy. It is considerably a systemic allergic reaction and its symptoms occur almost immediately or half an hour after exposure to latex. The skin irritation is caused by the Immunoglobulin E antibodies that are definite to the proteins found in natural latex.
A person can be exposed to latex products through different routes like mucus membranes (nose, mouth), cutaneous, (skin), aerosol (inhalation), or parenteral (blood). The symptoms of irritation could range from a not-so-serious case of rhinitis or conjunctivitis to hives and asthma brought about by bronchoconstriction. It is when these skin irritation symptoms are full-blown than they become fatal like cases of hypotension and anaphylaxis. In the use of surgical latex gloves, it is not only the latex that is the issue.Diagnosis The common use of cornstarch powder, which has been a staple in glove manufacturing to reduce friction, also plays a major role in the allergies caused by latex gloves. Research has revealed that the cornstarch powder binds with the latex proteins in the gloves. This combination allows the antigen in the gloves to reach the wearer’s skin especially when the skin becomes moist and, ultimately, the patient the person is in contact with.
