Herbal Nutrition
The biochemical and energetic nutrients which we digest, absorb, and metabolize from foodstuffs are the foundation of all cellular activity in the body, including growth, repair, reproduction, resistance to disease, and maintenance. Good nutrition is critically important to every form of life we know. Finding, growing, preparing, and storing food has been women’s work and women’s genius since time out of mind.
The Spirit of the Food.
Nutrition begins with milk from mother’s breast, from the breast of the Great Goddess. In earth-centered cultures, the harvesting and gathering of food is inter wound with sacred threads, and the consumption of the food is a sacrament. This aspect of nutrition is invisible, unmeasurable, undiscussed, but of utmost importance to the health of the individual and the ecology.
Healthy Diets .
When food choices are limited, women eat whatever is available.
As long as adequate carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals are consumed and clean water is available, health is easily maintained.(1) Restricted diets (vegan, vegetarian, impoverished) generally fail to provide adequately for women, and the addition of milk products, eggs, or meat to these diets optimizes health. When the food supply is abundant and foods are highly refined, as is the case in most Western countries, food choices may adversely affect health. This is due in part to an innate (healthy) craving for sweet, salt, and fat (which are scarce in nature but commercially abundant, leading to overconsumption) and in part to the degradation of the foodstuffs themselves
Protein.
After water, protein is the most plentiful substance in our bodies. Without protein we cannot create enzymes, antibodies, milk, menses, skin, hair, nails, muscle, brain, heart, or organs. We require twenty-two different amino acids (building blocks of protein), of which eight are considered essential nutrients. Animal foods contain all essential amino acids. No one food of vegetable origin contains them all, but combinations (such as corn and beans) do. Each and every amino acid must be present at once in the body, and in the correct proportions, for protein synthesis. If even one essential amino acid is low or missing, even temporarily, protein production slows or stops altogether.(2) Adult women can be healthy on low protein diets; however children, pregnant, lactating, and menopausal women require high levels of protein.
Fats.
Fat is the most concentrated source of energy in the diet. Found in vegetable seeds, beans, and nuts, fruits such as olives and avocados, and in all animal products, fat is vital to women’s health. Unfortunately, many American women avoid fat. A recent study (1999) found 26 percent of women deficient in vitamin E due to low-fat diets.Animal fats are more stable than vegetable oils, which become rancid within days after pressing. (Rancid fats promote cancer and heart disease.) Hydrogenation and partial-hydrogenation slow rancidity but create trans-fatty acids that create deposits on the blood vessels. Even unhydrogenated vegetable oils are unhealthy: They flood the body with omega-6 fatty acids (the primary fat component of arterial plaque), and contribute large amounts of free radicals that damage the arteries and initiate plaque deposits. Vitamins.
Vitamins are small organic compounds made by all living tissues. They are found in whole, fresh foods. Vitamins are absorbed best from dried, fermented, or cooked foods. Some vitamins are fat-soluble (A, E, D); some are water-soluble (B, C). All vitamins are groups of related enzymes that function together. Eighteen hundred carotenes and carotinoids contribute to the liver’s production of vitamin A, two dozen tocopherols function together as vitamin E, and only when ascorbic acid is joined by bioflavonoids and carotenes does it function as vitamin C.
Healthy diets supply adequate vitamins so long as refined foods are rarely eaten. “Enriched” flour is really impoverished, as it does not contain the entire complement of B vitamins and minerals found in the whole grain. When vitamins are synthesized in the laboratory, their complexity is reduced to one active ingredient. In situations of impoverishment and famine, supplements have health benefits. They do not replace healthy food, however, and long-term use of vitamin supplements poses health risks including more aggressive cancers (alpha tocopherol), faster growing cancers (ascorbic acid), and increased risk of cancer and heart disease (beta carotene). Minerals.
Minerals are inorganic compounds found in all plant and animal tissues as well as bones, hair, teeth, finger and toenails, and, of course, rocks. Minerals are also found in, and critical for, optimum functioning of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems, and all muscles, including the heart. Our need for some minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, manganese, and calcium, is large. But for trace minerals, such as selenium, iodine, molybdenum, boron, silicon, and germanium, our needs are minuscule. (4)Minerals may be difficult to get, even in a healthy diet. Overuse of chemical fertilizers reduces mineral content. According to US Department of Agriculture figures, during the period 1963-1992, the amount of calcium in fruits and vegetables declined an average of 30 percent. In white rice, calcium declined 62.5 percent, iron 32-45 percent, and magnesium 20-85 percent. (5) Not only are commercially grown grains low in minerals, refining removes what little minerals they do have.Seaweeds and herbs are dependable mineral sources when eaten, brewed (one ounce dried herbs steeped four hours in a quart of boiling water in a tightly covered jar), or infused into vinegar, rather than taken in capsules or tinctures. Many herbs, such as dandelion l-eaves, peppermint, red clover blossoms, stinging nettle, and oatstraw, are exceptional sources of minerals, according to researchers Mark Pedersen, Paul Bergner, and the USDA. (6,7) For instance, there are 3000 mg of calcium in 100 grams dried nettle.

Pain in the lower back or low back pain is a common concern, affecting up to 90% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. Up to 50% will have more than one episode. Low back pain is not a specific disease. Rather, it is a symptom that may occur from a variety of different processes. In up to 85% of people with low back pain, despite a thorough medical examination, no specific cause of the pain can be identified. Back pain can have many underlying reasons, but often no specific cause will be found and the pain will stop. This chapter tries to touch on many of the causes of back pain and proper evaluation and diagnosis.
Back Pain Symptoms
Pain in the lumbosacral area (lower part of the back) is the primary symptom of low back pain.
The pain may radiate down the front, side, or back of your leg, or it may be confined to the low back.
The pain may become worse with activity.
Occasionally, the pain may be worse at night or with prolonged sitting such as on a long car trip.
You may have numbness or weakness in the part of the leg that receives its nerve supply from a compressed nerve.
Causes of Back Pain
Kidney problems
Kidney infections, stones, and traumatic bleeding of the kidney (hematoma) are frequently associated with low back pain.
Diagnosis can involve urine analysis, sound-wave tests (ultrasound), or other imaging studies of the abdomen.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy commonly leads to low back pain by mechanically stressing the lumbar spine (changing the normal lumbar curvature) and by the positioning of the baby inside of the abdomen. Additionally, the effects of the female hormone estrogen and the ligament-loosening hormone relaxin may contribute to loosening of the ligaments and structures of the back. Pelvic-tilt exercises and stretches are often recommended for relieving this pain. Women are also recommended to maintain physical conditioning during pregnancy according to their doctors’ advice.

General recommendations are to resume normal, or near normal, activity as soon as possible. However, stretching or activities that place additional strain on the back are discouraged.
Sleeping with a pillow between the knees while lying on one side may increase comfort. Some doctors recommend lying on your back with a pillow under your knees.
No specific back exercises were found that improved pain or increased functional ability in people with acute back pain. Exercise, however, may be useful for people with chronic back pain to help them return to normal activities and work.
Nonprescription medications may provide relief from pain.
A lot of fat burning programs promise you a thinner body within a period that is unimaginable, most of the time these products are fake, they even claim to cure diseases. If you think logically somewhere you must know that it will not work.
There are 3 categories of fat burning programs. The first one handles the reduce of body fat you already have, these so called fat loss accelerator diets try to break the fat in your body.
The second category are diets which try to decrease your appetite so you will not store more fat and if you don’t store fat and you do the right exercises you eventually will lose fat. Your body will use the stored fats to maintain the daily routines so you will just burn fat fast by going to work, go shopping, etc…
The final category is the substitute food category, these fat loss programs attempt to educate people in the basics of good nutrition.
Mainly they are only effective on the long run instead of these programs which promise you instant results.
The worst diets are the first group, these fat burning weight loss programs reduce fat by influencing your metabolism. They try to let you burn more calories by increasing the metabolic rate of your body. Most of the time these fat burners are pills which, according to their manufacturers, will help you melt the pounds off you. They make you think that with a few pills per day you will lose weight while you still can eat pizza, hamburgers, french fries, fried chicken, etc…
Some manufacturers also claim that they have pills which can prevent the human body from absorbing fat.
You must face the truth here, the only thing that will burn fat is exercise with a balanced food program.
All other programs might mess up your body or do nothing. Some of these products increase blood pressure.
The second group can be effective in combination with improved nutrition, if you had a huge appetite than this might be a solution for you, everyone needs a balanced nutrition in order to live a healthy life. If you suddenly stop to eat you will damage your health, you need some extra vitamins, supplements, proteins in order to stay healthy.
The third group will try to change the way you eat, this might be the best solution for someone with an unhealthy lifestyle full of hamburgers and pizza. Eliminate these high calories foods and select foods carefully,it will give you more energy and you will burn fat faster than you can imagine.
Growth and development from toddler through to preschoolers and school age children is one of the most important stages of development of life. This period is marked by increase rate of growth in all dimensions of life. This is matched with increased demand of nutrients. To understand growth and development and correlated nutrient demand throughout this period, it is important to look at each and every stage independently.
During infancy, the child undergoes a rapid growth and development. Infancy is a critical period of development since the body is experiencing a rapid growth of some body organs. There is a high demand of energy and proteins due to rapid rate of growth. Since the child is born with nutrients reserves, the child should be exclusively breastfed as breast milk contains all the nutrients the child needs for the first six months.
Breast milk also contains immunoglobins which strengthen the immune system and is safe to the mother. AT the age of six month, most nutrient reserves, especially iron are depleted and the child will require weaning to supplement nutrients in breast milk. Complementary feeding should be introduced from six months and each food at a time to track its effect on the child. By the age of 12 months, the child should be consuming most of the table foods.
Toddler period begins soon after the child attains 12 months of age until they attain the age of 2 years. At this stage, the child has learned to walk up steps when held in the hand and can utter 10 to 25 words. The child may also begin to play with other children. Like in infancy, the child has increased nutrient demand to match the rapid growth of body cells.
There will be increased energy demand as the body muscles continue to growth and there is increased body movement and control. There will also be increased protein needs to generate new body cells while vitamins and mineral will be required for high body metabolism and building immune system. At this stage also the child learns to use their fingers and therefore parents can start introducing finger foods to teach the child to eat by themselves. Although the child can eat a wide range of table foods, breastfeeding should be continued until the child attains the age of 2 years. At this stage, the child will require a balanced diet.
Preschool period ranges from three to five years. During this period, the child continues with high rate of growth and development. Apart from physical and cognitive growth, there is a high level of social growth. The child interacts and plays with other children. Preschoolers can eat the food eaten by the rest of the family members unless they have allergic problems with some of the foods. However, their rate of growth is quite high compared to that of adults and therefore their diet should take this into consideration. At this period, the child may also start developing crave for junks and though there should be room for treats, this should be limited to ensure the child adhere to a health diet. Preschoolers should be allowed to feed by themselves.
School going age starts from five years onwards. This is a time of great change in the child as the child experience a slowed physical growth until they reach adolescent but there is growth in abstract and logical reasoning. This period is also marked by independence which may affect food intake due to preferences and peer influence. Parents must ensure adherence to a healthy balanced diet. While school aged children may eat junk foods in school or not meet dietary requirements at school, the two meal children eat at home, breakfast and supper, must be well balanced. At this period, parents must teach children on healthy eating patterns and dangers of junk food.
